JOHN DE GRAAF
January 2, 2005

I’ve got only one criticism of ON AMERICAN SOIL: I lost nearly a night’s sleep over it. Once I got started reading, I simply couldn’t stop without finishing the book—it’s that good.

ON AMERICAN SOIL is an example of the best in journalism, a dramatically told story by a reporter who cared enough to leave no stone unturned in his search for truth. It’s also a timely reminder of how both truth and civil liberties are too often ignored in wartime.

Hamann is a masterful writer and his book should be required reading in American history classes.

-John de Graaf, producer (for PBS) of
A Personal Matter: Gordon Hirabayashi v. the United States
