ON AMERICAN SOIL HONORED BY WASHINGTON CENTER FOR THE BOOK

Book is a finalist for annual Washington State Book Award, sponsored by the Seattle Public Library

The Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public Library announced the winners of its annual Washington State Book Award. ON AMERICAN SOIL was a finalist in the History/Biography category.

The winner in the category is "The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl," by Timothy Egan of Seattle. Egan is a national enterprise reporter for the New York Times; his outstanding book also won the National Book Award for nonfiction.

The finalists for History/Biography include ON AMERICAN SOIL, by Jack Hamann, "Strawberry Days" by David Neiwert of Seattle, and "Michelangelo's Mountain" by Eric Scigliano of Seattle.

Since 1967, the State of Washington has celebrated the state's literary community by presenting the Governor's Writers Awards -- now known as the Washington State Book Awards -- to the authors of outstanding books published during the previous year. The Washington State Library and the Washington Commission for the Humanities have administered the awards previously. The Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public Library assumed responsibility for the Washington State Book Awards beginning in 2000.
